Should you overwrite Reddit comments before deleting them?
Last updated: 2026-10-07
Some people edit each comment to meaningless text first, then delete it. The idea is that anything which reads the comment after the edit sees the replacement, not the original. It is a reasonable extra precaution, but it is not a guarantee: copies made before the edit keep your original words.
Why people do it
A deleted comment disappears from Reddit’s pages. Overwriting adds a step before that, for a few reasons people commonly give:
- Later copies get the new text. Anything that reads the comment after your edit, such as a tool that refreshes its copy or a crawler visiting for the first time, gets the replacement rather than what you wrote.
- Account deletion leaves text behind. Reddit’s help center says comments from a deleted account stay on Reddit, just without your name. People who plan to delete their account often edit or delete their content first.
- Belt and braces. If a delete fails silently, the comment that remains at least no longer says what it used to.
What overwriting cannot do
Overwriting only changes what Reddit holds as the current text. It does not reach copies that were made before the edit: third-party archives, datasets that were already collected, search engine snippets that have not been refreshed, screenshots, or quotes in other people’s replies. It also does not control what Reddit keeps in its own internal records or backups, such as any earlier versions it may retain. Think of it as a precaution that limits future exposure, not a way to erase the past.
Some practical limits too:
- Link posts and titles can’t be overwritten. Reddit lets you edit comment text and the body of a text post, but not a post’s title or the link of a link post. Those can only be deleted.
- Some old items may refuse edits. Reddit may refuse to edit some items, for example in archived threads. Those can usually still be deleted.
- It doubles the work. Each item needs an edit and then a delete, so the whole run takes about twice as long under Reddit’s rate limits.
How to do it by hand
- Open the comment on reddit.com and choose Edit from its menu.
- Replace the text with something neutral, for example a few random words. Avoid personal details, links or anything you wouldn’t want attached to your account.
- Save, then reload the page and check the new text is showing.
- Now delete the comment.
Checking that the edit stuck before deleting matters. If you delete straight away and the edit didn’t register, you gain nothing from it.
What to write as replacement text
Keep it boring. Random ordinary words are better than a fixed sentence repeated on every comment, which looks like spam in the thread and is easy to filter out. Don’t use the replacement to advertise anything, and don’t add a message that identifies you. If the comment is deleted afterwards, nobody normally sees the replacement on Reddit anyway.
Is it worth it?
It depends on why you are deleting. If you just want a tidy profile, plain deletion is enough. If you are concerned about later copies of your text, overwriting first is a cheap extra step, as long as you don’t expect it to undo copies that already exist. In both cases, save a backup of your own first, since neither step can be undone.
FAQ
Does overwriting remove my comment from archive sites?
No. If an archive already stored the original, it keeps it. Overwriting only affects copies made after your edit.
Can I just edit and not delete?
You can. The comment stays visible under your name with the new text. Most people delete afterwards.
Can I overwrite posts?
Only the body of a text post. Titles and links can’t be edited.
Will people see the edited text?
Briefly, if they load the thread between your edit and your delete. After deletion, Reddit shows the comment as deleted.
Doing it with SafeShred
SafeShred for Reddit, a Chrome extension, has an optional “overwrite, then delete” mode. It replaces each comment and text post with random ordinary words (no ads, no branding), re-reads to confirm the new text is in place, then deletes and checks again that the item is gone, retrying anything that remains. It skips items Reddit won’t let you edit and still deletes them. Everything runs in your own browser; your Reddit data is never sent to us. Free for up to 50 deletions a day, or $9.99 one-time for unlimited.
