How to delete all your Reddit comments
Last updated: 2026-10-07
Reddit does not have a “delete everything” button. You can delete comments one at a time, or use a tool that does the same thing for you, item by item. Either way, a long history takes time, and deleting only removes what Reddit shows. Copies made elsewhere are not affected.
Before you start
- Deleting your account is not the same thing. Reddit’s help center says posts and comments from a deleted account stay on Reddit; only your name is removed from them. If you want the text gone, delete it first, then delete the account if you wish.
- Deletion cannot be undone. If there is anything you may want later, save a copy first.
- Your profile does not show everything. Each list on your profile stops at around 1,000 items, so older comments can be hard to find. See the 1,000-item limit.
- Other people’s replies stay. When you delete a comment, replies to it remain, and your karma and account age don’t change.
Option 1: Delete comments by hand
This is fine for a few dozen comments and needs no extra tools.
- Sign in on reddit.com and open your profile.
- Go to the Comments tab.
- On a comment, open the “…” (more options) menu and choose Delete, then confirm.
- Repeat. For posts, use the Posts tab the same way.
Menu labels can differ slightly between the website and the apps. The real problem is scale: a few thousand comments take many hours of clicking, and once the newest items are gone you still have to reach the older ones the profile no longer lists.
Option 2: Use your Reddit data export to find everything
Reddit lets you request a copy of your data. It includes your posts and comments, so it is the most complete list of what you have written. It does not delete anything on its own, but it tells you, or a tool, exactly what to delete.
- Request your data at reddit.com/settings/data-request. Reddit says it can take up to 30 days to prepare.
- Download and unzip the archive. Look for
comments.csvandposts.csv. - Each row is one of your comments or posts, identified by its Reddit ID. You can use it to find old items your profile no longer lists, or load the files into a tool that accepts them.
Step by step, with notes on the files: how to request and use your Reddit data export.
Option 3: Use a browser extension or tool
A bulk delete tool repeats the same delete action you would do by hand, using your login. Things worth checking before you pick one:
- Does it show you what will be deleted first? A preview (dry run) with filters avoids deleting the wrong things.
- Does it let you save a backup? Once deleted, your text is gone for you too.
- Does it reach past the newest ~1,000 items? Walking several sort orders and reading the data export both help.
- Does it check afterwards? Deletions can occasionally fail or not show up right away, so re-reading and retrying is useful.
- Where does your data go? Prefer tools that run in your own browser over services that ask for your password.
- Does it still work with today’s reddit.com? Reddit changes its site from time to time, and tools built for an older layout can stop working.
How long it really takes
Reddit limits how fast an account can make changes. A careful tool slows itself down to stay within those limits, so plan on hours, not minutes. As a rough guide, SafeShred handles about 300 items per hour, which means a history of several thousand comments takes most of a day. Overwriting before deleting adds an extra step per item. Tools that promise to go much faster risk hitting rate limits and errors.
What deletion does not do
Deleting removes your comments from Reddit’s pages. It does not remove copies that already exist elsewhere: Reddit’s own internal records and backups, third-party archives, screenshots, quotes in other people’s replies, data that was already collected by others, or search engine results that have not been refreshed yet. Treat deletion as cleaning up what is publicly shown on Reddit, not as erasing the past.
Some people also edit their comments to random text before deleting, as an extra precaution. That has its own limits, explained in overwriting before deleting.
FAQ
Can I delete all my Reddit comments at once?
Not with a single built-in button. You delete them one by one, by hand or with a tool that does it for you.
If I delete my account, are my comments deleted?
No. According to Reddit’s help center, they stay on Reddit without your name. Delete them first if you want them gone.
Why can’t I see my older comments anymore?
Profile lists stop at around 1,000 items each. Older comments still exist; you need another sort order or your data export to find them.
Will deleting lots of comments get my account banned?
We don’t know of an official Reddit rule about it, and we can’t promise anything. Going slowly and respecting rate limits is the sensible approach.
Does deleting remove my comments from Google or archives?
Not directly. Search engines update on their own schedule, and archives keep what they already copied.
Doing it with SafeShred
If you’d rather not click through thousands of comments, SafeShred for Reddit is a Chrome extension that does this in your own browser on today’s reddit.com. It collects your comments and posts from several sort orders, can import comments.csv and posts.csv from your data export, lets you preview with filters and a keep-list, saves a JSON or CSV backup, can overwrite text before deleting, and re-reads afterwards to retry anything still showing. Your Reddit data is never sent to us. The free version deletes up to 50 items a day; Unlimited is a one-time $9.99 with a 14-day refund.
